TSDSI congratulates oneM2M – the global partnership project for developing open standards for Interoperable IoT Systems – on its 10th anniversary(new)

25 July 2022:

On July 24, 2012, seven leading standards bodies from across the world – ARIB (Japan), ATIS (Americas), CCSA (China), ETSI (Europe), TIA (Americas), TTA (S. Korea) and TTC (Japan), came together to launch oneM2M – a global partnership initiative to develop a global standard for interoperable and scalable Internet of Things (IoT) systems. TSDSI (India) joined the initiative in 2015.

In the last 10 years of oneM2M’s existence, over 200 member organisations have contributed to defining a technical framework to support end-to-end IoT systems, applications, and services. The resulting technical standards have been developed in an open and collaborative environment, with a clear governance framework. In order to foster a global and scalable IoT market, all oneM2M Technical Specifications and Reports are accessible in the public domain at no charge.

In her congratulatory message, Pamela Kumar, Director General, TSDSI, said that “The potential of IoT/M2M based solutions to (digitally) transform all aspects of our lives (and all vertical industries) is well understood. However, the realisation of this potential has been evasive because of the “vendor-locked” deployments. The oneM2M community has been steadily working to enable truly interoperable and scalable deployments. In the last decade the foundational framework of oneM2M has been put in place and next decade holds the promise of realising the vision of interoperable Internet of Things.

As India is progressing on its Digital transformation journey with the launch of several “SMART Missions” – Smart Cities, Smart Villages, Smart Grid, Smart Transport etc – an urgent need for Standards based IoT deployments has been felt. Hence India has become the first country to formally endorse oneM2M as the National Standard for IoT/M2M applications.

TSDSI members have been contributing significantly to the standard, since its inception. Many more TSDSI members are building products and solutions based on this standard. With its well-defined common service functions, oneM2M is the key to deployment of multi-vendor IoT/M2M services across verticals and optimal utilisation of resources, levelling the field for Start-ups and for rapid realisation of innovations from across the globe”.
