Webinar on “OpenAirInterface 5G work in regard to standardization”

October 17, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

TSDSI is proud to announce the 12th Knowledge sharing webinar under the aegis of India EU Partnership Project on “OpenAirInterface 5G work in regards to standardization”.

Abstract: The OpenAirInterface Software Alliance is (OSA) is a non-profit consortium fostering a community of industrial as well as research contributors for open source software and hardware development for the 4G/5G core network, Radio Access Network (RAN) and User Equipment (UE) of 3GPP 4G/5G cellular networks. This work is geared towards development of 4G/5G Cellular Stack on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware. Starting off years ago as an academic and research initiative, the OpenAirInterface (OAI) software, being an open (source) implementation, is now finding new uses as the telecom industry as the latter learns about open source and the value it brings to this industry. The OSA, alongside its much esteemed partner organization ETSI, is evangelizing open implementations through a standardization path.

Business practices teach us that markets tend to be dynamic and trade frequently when products are standardized. While “standardization” is a much-employed term in the telecoms industry, its true application from a market perspective has over the years been distorted due to lack of interoperability between vendors across some key network interfaces. As a result, telecom operators have decided to combine their efforts to standardize these interfaces in a manner so as to allow multiple vendors to interoperate across these interfaces. The O-RAN consortium, among others, is an operator-led initiative attempting to standardize interfaces where 3GPP might not have deemed necessary. Open source is expected to play a key role in going forward with these goals, both within 3GPP as a test and validation tool during standardization, and outside, by providing independent software allowing to rapidly implement network functions and demonstrate interoperability. These aspects represent new challenges for the industry as well as standardization bodies.

The OpenAirInterface is the world’s largest independent 5G community with the fastest growing 5G assets and therefore is the foremost provider of open software to support innovation. In this webminar we shall detail these considerations and help participants understand the basics of OAI.
