International Workshop on Convergence of Broadcast and Broadband
November 14, 2018 - November 15, 2018
ORGANISERS – TSDSI & ATSC
Gulmohar, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi
ATSC and TSDSI, jointly organised an “International Workshop on Convergence of Broadcast & Broadband” in New Delhi on 14-15 November 2018, to stimulate dialog on this topic among expert stakeholders from the Govt. Industry and technology experts.
About the Workshop:
The explosive growth of mobile and OTT video has created a need for a more efficient transmission solution to provide a high-quality user experience. One-to-many broadcasts of live news, sports, entertainment and data offers an effective means to offload high demand traffic. With the advent of new technologies in telecommunications enabling substantially high data speeds over IP based networks, convergence of IP based broadcasting and broadband will benefit network/service providers as well as consumers. For such benefit to arise, standard driven implementation is a necessity.
An IP-based open global standard should make it possible to develop a convergence of broadcast and broadband both in network and in user devices, particularly for “Direct to Mobile” (DTM) services. Broadcast and Broadband Convergence is under active consideration of the government in India and across the world. Early trials and deployments have started.
The objective of this conference was to bring together technical, business and regulatory experts from India and across the world to kick-start a discussion on “Broadcast and Broadband convergence” from an India perspective. There was special focus on understanding India’s unique requirements and challenges and a review of trends in global standards development. This would help define a strategy and approach to develop India appropriate standards and use these to influence global standards.
The conference offered the opportunity to hear from and interact with technical and business experts from India and around the world to discover how interested organizations can benefit from standard based implementation of convergence.
This conference was a collaboration activity under the MoU signed between TSDSI and ATSC.
As an immediate takeaway from the workshop, TSDSI has proposed formation of a FOCUS GROUP ON CONVERGENCE OF BROADCAST AND BROADBAND to work out an action plan to achieve convergence of Broadcast and Broadband by identifying and addressing technical and policy issues. The Focus Group will be mentored by Mr A K Mittal, Advisor- Networks, TSDSI. It is open to non TSDSI members. Please contact akmittal@tsdsi.in to join in the activities of the Group.
PARTICIPATION: Approximately 80+ participants attended the workshop.
VENUE: The workshop was held in Gulmohar Hall, India Habitat Center, Delhi, Gulmohar Hall
