DoT-TSDSI Micro Workshop Series on ‘Advancing 5G towards 6G’ #Workshop 5: ‘Enhancing Security, Efficiency and Performance in Beyond 5G Networks’ (May 12,2023 Hybrid)

DoT-TSDSI joint workshop series on ‘Advancing 5G towards 6G’ aims to disseminate information about 3GPP Release 19 technology areas and timelines to the Indian technology ecosystem. The goal is to mobilize Indian Industry technologists and Academic researchers to actively participate and contribute to the ongoing and future work at 3GPP.
The fifth micro-workshop in the series, was conducted in partnership with IIIT Bangalore, focused on ‘Enhancing Security, Efficiency and Performance in Beyond 5G Networks’.
About this micro workshop:
The workshop introduced the audience to some of the state-of-the-art challenges and how to address them for designing beyond 5G wireless systems. The selected topics have the potential to be a part of 3GPP Release-19 and beyond releases and TSDSI’s New Item Proposals towards 6G. In particular, the following topics were discussed in this workshop:
Low-Complexity MIMO Receivers for High Mobility Applications – The conventional one-tap equalization designed for multicarrier waveforms does not work in high mobility scenarios due to the doubly-dispersive nature of the wireless channel, demanding a sophisticated receiver design with very high computational complexity. This work exploits the inherent multi-banded structure of the channel and investigates a common framework to design low-complexity linear receivers for multicarrier waveform-based MIMO systems for high-mobility applications.
Sparsity-based channel estimation for IRS-aided mmWave MIMO systems– Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) is a promising technology suitable for mass deployment in future wireless networks owing to its cost-effective nature of realizing energy efficiency. Channel estimation, one of the key steps to achieve performance gains of IRS assisted systems, becomes challenging due to limited capabilities of the IRS elements. This work leverages the inherent spatial sparsity of mmWave channels to develop accurate channel estimation algorithms with low bandwidth overhead.
Optimal Relay and Antenna Selection for PHY Layer Security– In large, dynamic wireless networks, classical cryptography might not be suitable due to problems in terms of key distribution and key management, and computational complexity, especially for energy-constrained IoT applications. This work exploits the randomness inherent in noisy wireless channels, collectively referred to as Physical Layer Security, to address the security challenges for a wireless network under an eavesdropping attack. The main focus of this talk will be based on the physical layer security enhancement by using multiple antenna and cooperative relaying techniques considering underlay spectrum sharing.
Slicing and resource management in 5G Advanced RAN- Several 3GPP works have just started to investigate the challenges and potentials to enable the multi-service RAN thereby transitioning towards a service-oriented RAN architecture. The concept of network slicing has evolved to support the needs of the business through the specification of several service Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as data rate, latency and reliability. Considering the limited radio resources and increasing bandwidth demand, this talk investigates a novel real-time radio resource allocation and optimization methodologies to enhance the slice occupancy and slice QoS throughput in 5GAdvanced RAN.
