Women in Standards – Round Table 2025 (11th March 2025, online)

Information and Communication Technologies are a fundamental driver of today’s society. Standards play a crucial role in effective development and deployment of these technologies.
Women bring valuable perspectives to development of standards as users of technology and as innovators. However, despite significant advancements, participation of women in developing technology standards remains disproportionately low as compared to men.
In the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitally driven society, gender-diverse participation in the standardization process is imperative to ensure balanced, accountable, and bias-free technology development. Enhancing involvement of women in standardization efforts improves the quality and relevance of technology standards.
TSDSI organized an online Round Table on “Women in Standards” on 11th March, 2025 from 14:30 – 15:45 PM IST with the objective of promoting participation of women in standards development.
The discussions featured women technology experts who are in various stages of engaging with development of standards. They shared their experiences and learnings, including how it has helped them in their career & organizational growth.
Key Takeaways & Recommendations:
Organizations with higher female representation in leadership roles serve as exemplars, yet systemic and institutionalized practices are still lacking. Foster a culture where women are not only part of the conversation but lead the transformation of technology standards.
- Develop clear communication and negotiation skills to effectively articulate problems, propose solutions, and build consensus among diverse stakeholders
- Identify relevant standards bodies, actively participate in discussions, involve juniors for skill development, map study groups to national bodies, and find the right mentors for guidance
- Launch educational initiatives to increase awareness of standardization processes and opportunities within technical bodies like ITU and TSDSI
- Establish mentorship programs led by successful women in the field to support emerging professionals
- Future technologies should be accountable and inclusive
