DoT-TSDSI Micro Workshop Series on ‘Advancing 5G towards 6G’ #Workshop 3: Studies related to ‘Vertical Applications and Services’ (January 27, 2023 Online)

DoT-TSDSI joint workshop series on ‘Advancing 5G towards 6G’ aims to disseminate information about 3GPP Release 19 technology areas and timelines to the Indian technology ecosystem. The goal is to mobilize Indian Industry technologists and Academic researchers to actively participate and contribute to the ongoing and future work at 3GPP.
The third micro-workshop in the series focussed on the 3GPP Studies related to ‘Vertical Applications and Services’.
About this micro workshop:
5G offers network operators the potential to offer new services to new categories of vertical users. The capabilities of 5G have been continuously evolving since Release 15 to cater to a wide array of Vertical Applications and Services Industries like Public Safety, Broadcast/Media Delivery, Rail Industry, Automotive Industry, Education, Aeronautical (Drones/UAVs), Healthcare, Utilities, Factory Automation (Industry 4.0), Agriculture, Exploration/Mining, etc. While 5G is advancing towards 6G, the new use cases and requirements from different Vertical Application and Services industries will play a key role in shaping the network evolution. This workshop introduced the audience to the latest studies ongoing at 3GPP in Vertical Applications and Services area related to Metaverse, UAV/Drones, Future Railways, Smart Railway Services and Ambient power enabled IoT services. The following Release 19 study items were discussed in this workshop:
Study on Localized Mobile Metaverse Services (FS_Metaverse) This study will investigate specific use cases and service requirements to enable 5GS support of enhanced XR-based services which are an essential part of ‘Metaverse’ services including identification of users and digital entities, Acquisition/user/exposure of local information and enabling Shared and interactive user experience of local content and services, accessed either by users in the proximity or remotely.
Study of UAV Phase 3 (FS_UAV_Ph3) This study aims to identify additional use cases and potential service requirements to improve 5GS support of UAV applications including Drone operations and management including pre-flight and in-flight operations, UAV route management, Safety and security in UTM operations for DAA, Charging and Regulatory requirements and Enabling redundancy and reliability of C2 traffic.
Study on Ambient power-enabled Internet of Things (FS_AmbientIoT) This study aims to develop use cases and service requirements for 5GS to support ambient power-enabled Internet of Things where the energy is provided through the harvesting of radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other power source that could be seen suitable.
Study on FRMCS Phase 5 (FS_FRMCS_Ph5) This study aims to identify new cases and requirements and also enhanced existing use cases and requirements for FRMCS based on the UIC FRMCS programme which includes use cases for Emergency alerts, Multi-train voice communications, Location services, Priority level negotiation, Public train and railway staff emergency communication, real-time translation of user to user speech communication, time synchronization, etc.
Study on Supporting of Railway Smart Station Services (FS_RAILSS) This study aims to identify new cases and requirements for Railway Smart Station Services which includes use cases for Station operation monitoring and control, Passenger supporting services and Evolution of use cases for business and performance applications included in TR 22.889.
