SUMMARY:Drone Connectivity\, Operations and Standards - TSDSI BIS Joint Online Workshop (October 4\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in partnership with BIS organized a workshop on Drone Connectivity\, Operations and Standards on 4th October 2021\, 0930-1330 IST. \nContext: \nLong range connectivity offered by telecom networks are a key to enabling Drone operations in real world use cases. This includes beyond Line of Sight operations\, multi-drone operations\, connecting to network compute and intelligence\, monitoring etc. Standards are the essential enabler for unlocking the promise and potential of Drone applications and ecosystem. \nTSDSI has published a technical report on Drone Communication Services Support in Cellular Networks (TSDSI TR 6007 V1.0.0). This report captures India specific flight requirements during takeoff\, in-flight and post-flight operations. It also includes the requirements on the connectivity aspects between drones and 3GPP cellular network and recommendations for using Digital Sky  platform [Ref: DGCA RPAS Guidance manual]\, a regulatory framework from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)\, India for seamless and secure operations of Drones in Indian airspace. \nTSDSI members are now carrying out a study on UAV assisted Cloud RAN for 5G and beyond (SI83).  \nBIS has taken the initiative of formulating standards for drones in the country. Initial drafts have been formulated with contributions from several academicians\, industry stakeholders\, entrepreneurs and committee members of UAV Systems Subcommittee constituted by BIS under the convenorship of Prof. S.N. Omkar.  \nAbout the Workshop: \nBIS Drone Standards Subcommittee and TSDSI organized a deep-dive online workshop on Drone Connectivity\, Operations and Standards on 4th October 2021. This workshop aimed to serve as a platform for aviation and telecom industries to collaborate for drafting standards to serve the connectivity needs for Drone Services. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI and IIT Delhi jointly organized the “MEC 5G Hackathon: The MEC 5G Challenge” on 24 September 2021 at 1500 – 1730 hrs IST. A research project entitled “Building an end-to-end 5G Test Bed” has been executed as a multi-institute collaborative project with participation from eight institutes- IIT Bombay\, IIT Delhi\, IIT Madras\, IIT Kanpur\, IIT Hyderabad\, IISc Bangalore\, CEWiT and SAMEER. Every institute has contributed in a complementary manner to the test bed\, based on their research interests and expertise. \nMEC Hackathon: MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing) can serve many key 5G use cases. Most of them are related to application scenarios specifically targeted to vertical markets of the 5G era. The purpose of this was to demonstrate the usage of the MEC system as an enabler for different use cases and business objectives\, helping all stakeholders to develop a diverse\, open MEC ecosystem. Each one has contributed to the testbed in a complementary manner based on the expertise and interest of each institute. \nTestbed Initiative at IIT Delhi: With the world racing towards 5th generation broadband wireless technologies on all fronts\, it is a crucial phase for telecom R&D and product development in India\, considered one of the three largest telecom markets of the world. 5G Research and Standardization is reaching its global peak\, and technology demonstration and testbeds have started gaining momentum. With a number of Government initiatives such as smart cities\, Digital India and BharatNet depending heavily on the communication infrastructure\, early leads by India in 5G technology development and deployments are very crucial to the country. DESCRIPTION:IIT Delhi\, in partnership with TSDSI\, organised a Webinar on “Indigenous Li-Fi 5G test bed at IIT Delhi” on 5th August 2021 at 0930 to 1600 IST. A research project titled “Building an end to end 5G Test Bed” has been executed as a multi-institute collaborative project with participation from eight institutes – IIT Bombay\, IIT Delhi\, IIT Hyderabad\, IIT Madras\, IIT Kanpur\, IISc Bangalore\, CEWiT and SAMEER. Each one would be contributing to the test bed in a complementary manner based on the expertise and interest of each institute. \nTest Bed Initiative at IIT Delhi: With the world racing towards 5th generation broadband wireless technologies on all fronts\, it is a crucial phase for telecom R&D and product development in India\, considered one of the three largest telecom markets of the world. 5G Research and Standardization is reaching its global peak\, and technology demonstration and test beds have started gaining momentum. With a number of Government initiatives such as smart cities\, Digital India and BharatNet depending heavily on the communication infrastructure\, early leads by India in 5G technology development and deployments are very crucial to the country. We then investigate the problems for the VLC MAC along with the ongoing research activities and standardization. The receiver lens design is discussed\, and design examples for hexapolar and conical ray release are presented. The optical design procedure includes non-sequential ray tracing\, the mapping method\, and the edge-ray principle for focusing non-paraxial rays. Optical ray-tracing simulations with realistic models are used for model validation in COMSOL Multiphysics®. \n\n\n\nDemo#2 \nVLC Tx and Rx: (by Vaibhav)\n14:20\n14:40\n\nDemonstration of Li-Fi downlink by transferring a sine signal between LED (Tx) and photodetector (Rx). This acts as a frontend of the transmitter and receiver of the Li-Fi link. \n\n\n\nDemo#3 \nVLC design in FPGA   \n(by Ankit and Krishnadeep)\n14:40\n15:00\n\nIn this demo\, we demonstrate pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) schemes used for the Li-Fi network over FPGA. The audio signal or a Psuedo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) is used to input this system. The ZYNQ Ultrascale+ Xillinx FPGA boards have been used with ADC/DAC card (Abacco FMC150) to implement this scheme. \n\n\n\nDemo#4 \nVLC in USRP (by Dr Arun)\n15:00\n15:20\n\nThis demo aims to design a physical layer of a simplex Li-Fi link that achieves a high data rate. The physical layer integrates the host computer\, transmitter\, and receiver. The transmitter and receiver are designed using Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) using software-defined radio concepts. Digital modulation techniques like BPSK\, QPSK\, QAM 16 have been developed and tested. We demonstrate the QPSK modulation scheme through USRP\, which achieves up to 5 Mbps data rate. \n\n\n\nDemo#5 \nVLC uplink (by Mayank)\n  \n15:20\n  \n15:40\n\nDemonstration of Li-Fi uplink by enabling the communication link between the two FPGA boards (ZCU102 ultrascale+) using PCIe uplink modules. SUMMARY:“Standards Driven Research” Online Workshop at the NCC2021 (July 29\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:Telecommunications Standards Development Society\, India (TSDSI) has been promoting the concept of “Standards Driven Research” in order to synergise the research in our technology institutes with creation of an IP pool that can be translated to Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). Achieving prominence in Global Standards Development is a key indicator of emergence of India from a “late consumer of mature technology” to becoming an “globally competitive innovator in emerging technologies”. TSDSI is actively working to establish collaborations between the research community across academia and industry/start-ups. \nTSDSI organized a workshop under the aegis of NCC 2021 to encourage researchers from Academic Institutes to develop and contribute their research ideas into formal standards development activities at National and Global levels. The workshop featured keynotes\, expert talks\, and panel discussion on examples of standards driven research initiatives and emerging opportunities. \nAbout NCC2021: The National Conference on Communications (NCC) is arguably the most important national conference today in the area of communications\, signal processing and networks. The NCC is India’s premier annual conference organized by the Joint Telematics Group (JTG) consisting of IITs and IISc. The JTG is a coordinating body whose main role is to facilitate the conduct of the annual conference and closer interaction of academia\, industry\, and government in the broad area of communications. \nIn a span of little more than two decades\, the conference has acquired substantial recognition and is now widely known in many countries overseas. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in partnership with IIT Bombay\, organised a live webinar on 9th July 2021 from 1600 to 1710 IST\, to present an overview of the DoT sponsored project ‘Indigenous 5G Test-bed’. The webinar provided an overview of the project along with IIT Bombay’s contribution towards the testbed. \nAbout the Webinar: The webinar provided an overview of the end-to-end 5G testbed\, developed indigenously by a consortium of eight leading Indian academic and research institutes. 5G promises much higher data rates and new applications to take telecommunication networks to the next level in near future. The goal of this testbed is to develop the key components of 5G networks from the ground up\, in order to make them available for experimentation and further development to researchers\, startups\, industry and other players in the Indian telecommunications ecosystem. \nThe 5G testbed team at IIT Bombay has led the development of the 5G core subsystem\, consisting of components that interface with the radio access network and provide registration\, session management\, high-speed data forwarding and other core network services in the 5G network. A key feature of the 5G network is a unified core supporting a variety of access technologies. Wi-Fi is one of the most popular wireless access technologies today and it is expected to be an integral component of the 5G network too. Along with the Core Network functions\, the IIT Bombay team has also developed components to integrate Wi-Fi based Non-3GPP Access Network with the 5G Core. \nThis webinar begun with a brief overview of 5G\, with a specific focus on the components developed at IIT Bombay and then the design of the 5G testbed components developed by IIT Bombay\, the supported features\, and the progress made so far was described followed by a discussion on the ways in which users can leverage this work to further their research and development agenda in the 5G technology. \nSpeakers \nSpeaker #1:  Mr. A.K. Mittal \nTopic: Introduction of TSDSI and 5Gi Standards  \nSpeaker’s Bio: Shri A.K. Mittal is associated with TSDSI as Advisor with special focus on standardisation in wireless and wireline systems and handles standards related activities of TSDSI in 3GPP and ITU-R. \nHe began his career in R&D at Indian Telephone Industries Ltd and later joined Department of Telecommunication (DoT)\, Government of India where he worked in a variety of domains like Satellite Communication\, OFC\, Microwave\, Mobile Networks\, Switching Systems\, Network Management\, Licensing\, Regulation\, Standards\, Testing and Certification etc. He was Head\, Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC)\, the technology arm of the Department of Telecommunications. He has represented the Government of India in various bilateral and multilateral international meetings. \nHe did his graduation in Electronics and Communications Engineering in 1976 from Indian Institute of Technology\, Roorkee. He also holds a Diploma in Management. Before joining IITB in 2013\, she obtained her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010 and 2006 respectively. After her Ph.D.\, she worked at Movik Networks\, a startup in the telecom space\, for 3 years before joining IITB. SUMMARY:TSDSI -TCOE India Webinar on Oxygen Concentrators and Ventilators- How to Make in India (May 8\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:India is in the grip of a COVID -19 Pandemic spiral with positive cases continuing to rise and new mutations being discovered. Medical infrastructure is overstretched. A large percentage of COVID casualties in this second wave are because of lack of oxygen– a situation that could have been prevented in most cases by timely support through oxygen concentrators or ventilators in extreme cases. Oxygen concentrators have become the crucial first-aid tool in this battle.  However\, there is a severe shortage of concentrators in the market with the sudden surge in demand from end users\, RWAs and small nursing homes/hospitals. \nThe need of the hour is to have “Affordable” concentrators and ventilators that can be mass produced within the country\, backed by a robust supply chain. In this scenario\, a few innovative designs have been developed by technologists in India – which are at various stages of approvals/commercialisation. \nAbout the Webinar: \nThe webinar showcased two such innovations (from the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore)\, discussed the steps involved in commercialization at scale (including the certifications and approvals for manufacturing) and potential areas that require support. DESCRIPTION:5G holds great promise for India\, one of the three largest telecom markets of the world and racing towards becoming a digital economy. It is also a golden opportunity to close the gap in telecom manufacturing in the country. \nITU has recently approved three Radio Interface technologies- 3GPP 5G-RIT\, 3GPP 5G-SRIT and TSDSI’s 5Gi conforming to the International Mobile Telecommunications 2020 (IMT 2020)\, aka 5G. These will now be used for global commercial deployments. Technology demonstrations to showcase potential of 5G and test beds are now gaining centre stage. \n 5G Test Bed Initiative: IIT Delhi \nA multi-institute collaborative Research project on 5G Indigenous Testbed\, is being executed with participation from eight institutes – IIT Bombay\, IIT Delhi\, IIT Hyderabad\, IIT Madras\, IIT Kanpur\, IISc Bangalore\, CEWiT and SAMEER. SUMMARY:TSDSI-TIA Workshop on “5G Networks: Strategies for Enabling Standards Driven Technologies & Innovation” (April 7 & 9\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:India has staked a claim to development of global 5G standards thanks to contributions by TSDSI. TSDSI members actively contributed towards drafting of the “Making India 5G Ready” report of Department of Telecommunication – 5G High Level Forum. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\, an UN body that is setting requirements for IMT 2020 (aka 5G)\, adopted the Low-Mobility-Large-Cell (LMLC) use case proposed by TSDSI as a mandatory 5G requirement in 2017. This addresses the problem of rural coverage by mandating large cell sizes in rural terrains\, scattered and/or sparsely populated areas in developing as well as developed countries. 5Gi\, the first ever Mobile Radio Interface Technology contribution from India\, developed by TSDSI has recently been approved as one of the 3 Radio Interface Technologies of IMT-2020\, paving the way for 100% broadband connectivity in India. TSDSI has also begun work on technologies beyond 5G. \nTIA has a rich history of developing and establishing global standards which are critical to the deployment of various communications networks.  In particular\, our technology standards are used for the design\, construction\, and maintenance of towers for antennas\, as well as for the design and deployment of cabling infrastructure\, both copper and fiber\, for homes\, commercial buildings\, and data centers.  These standards are all being updated by their respective engineering committees to enable and support the 5G environment.  In addition\, TIA’s Technology Programs are focused on enabling industry advancements for Smart Buildings and Data Centers and our program participant working groups are addressing the unique needs for building out 5G and IoT infrastructure for public and private spaces.  TL 9000 is our globally recognized process-based quality management system standard relied on by service providers and suppliers for deploying all ICT equipment and services\, including 5G and IoT.  Our new Supply Chain security standard will provide a similar verifiable\, process-based standard for ensuring the security of the 5G supply chain. \nDigital communications technologies are playing an increasingly indispensable role in our lives\, which is expected to be further enhanced by 5G. 5G will play a critical role in the emerging environment – be it remote surgeries\, Low-cost Automation\, Smart manufacturing\, M2M. In this scenario\, it is important to recognize the significance of supporting but critical aspects – Data Centre Infrastructure\, Supply Chain Security and Service Performance Reliability. \nAbout the Workshop: \nTSDSI and TIA\, as part of our agreement to collaborate for progress of ICT standards\, are jointly organizing a workshop on “5G Networks: Strategies for Enabling Standards Driven Technologies & Innovation” on 7 & 9 April 2021. \nThe workshop will dwell on following strategically important technologies/standards in the current ecosystem. \nSession #11: Data Centre Technologies for 5G and Evolving Trends in Standardization \nSession Chairs – Jacques Fluet (TIA)\, R Prakash (TSDSI) \nThe data center is evolving to meet the new requirements driven by 5G. SUMMARY:Workshop on "Visible light for Broadband Communications: Current Research & Standardization" (March 25-26\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:IIIT Delhi Center of Excellence on LiFi supported by India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project is organizing a workshop on “Visible light for Broadband Communications: Current Research & Standardization” on 25-26 March 2021 from 9:30 AM IST onwards. \nThe two-day workshop will feature invited speakers from academia\, industry\, start-ups\, and government concerns\, both from India and the EU. Due to the ongoing pandemic situation\, the workshop will be held in a virtual-mode. \nBackground: \nA Center of Excellence (CoE) on LiFi has been established in IIIT Delhi under the purview of the India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project. As a part of this project\, the CoE will not only design relevant courses on LiFi\, but will also facilitate capacity building by supporting research collaborations and exchange of experts between India and the EU. To kickstart the activities of the CoE\, this workshop is being organized. \nAbout the Workshop: \nVisible Light Communication technology will be most useful in indoor environments as it will be able to provide large bandwidths. This will also be very useful for providing high bandwidth last mile connectivity in remote and rural areas. \nThis workshop will mainly focus on the requirements and challenges of deployment in such scenarios. The inputs gathered from the workshop will help in working out innovative solutions. The test bed will enable such innovations which can be contributed to standards.
