SUMMARY:Session on "Smart Communication Solutions for Smart Utilities and Smart Cities" @ India Smart Utility Week (ISUW) 2023 on 1 March 2023 from 14:00-17:30 hrs IST
DESCRIPTION:The 9th edition of India Smart Utility Week (ISUW) 2023 was scheduled from 28 Feb – 04 March 2023 at Hotel Lalit\, New Delhi\, India. As part of ISUW 2023\, Telecommunications Standards Development Society\, India (TSDSI) along with DoT and TEC\, organized a session on “Smart Communications for Smart Utilities and Smart Cities” on 1st March 2023 from 14:00 to 17:30 IST. \nAbout the Session: \nReliable communication system is the backbone of efficient and trouble-free operations and management of utility systems. A typical utility today is using multiple communication systems for different operations. For example\, leased bandwidth is used for enterprise IT systems; and utility’s own fibre network (or dedicated leased lines) is used for network automation systems; while yet other communication systems are used for smart metering and other utility applications. This scenario is difficult to manage and scale up; and also complex to establish and maintain interoperability between different systems connected on different communication networks with different data rates and latency. The emerging trend amongst forward looking utilities is to build own wireless network for captive use. \nIndia has commenced rollout of 5G networks which can unleash new economic opportunities and societal benefits giving it the potential for being a transformational force for Indian society. It can help the country leapfrog the traditional barriers to development as well as advance the ‘Digital India’ vision. It is estimated that the cumulative economic impact of 5G on India can reach one trillion USD by 2035. \nISGF has been advocating for allocation of spectrum to utilities and other critical sectors to build their own private 5G networks for captive use rather than leasing from Telecom operators which is not only costly but also may not match with the Telcos rollout plans and utilities requirements. Government of India approved private 5G networks in June 2022 which is a landmark decision. A 5G private network\, allows the use of 5G technologies to create a dedicated network with unified connectivity\, optimised services and a secure means of communication within a specific area. This will help utilities to integrate all their systems in single unified communication system which drastically improve the performance while reducing the total cost of ownership. \nThis session discussed important initiatives taken by TSDSI towards standards for utilities and smart cities as well as cloud interoperability in the context of utilities. \nThe seminar discussed: \n\n5G Network and Enabling Technologies\nPrivate 5G Networks – Case Studies\nonem2m for utilities and smart cities\nCloud Interoperability\nKey Recommendations\n\nSchedule: 1 March 2023\, 14:00 – 17:30 IST \nVenue: Regency 3 at Hotel Lalit\, New Delhi \nRegistration: Registrations are now closed. \nProgram Agenda: \n\n\n\n14:00 ~ 14:15 IST\nWelcome Address: ISGF/TSDSI \nSpecial Address: Mahesh Shulka\, Member-Technology\, DOT*\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n14:15 ~ 15:45 IST\nSession -1: 5G Private Networks for Utilities and Smart Cities    \nChair:  Sushil Kumar\, DDG (IoT) – TEC\, DOT \nModerator: Alex Vikas\, ADG\, DOT \nSpeakers: \n1.       Andres Carvallo\, Texas State University* \n2.       Ganesh Srinivasan\, CEO\, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd* \n3.       Phil Beecher\, Chair\, Wi-SUN Alliance \n4.       Vivek Goel\, Chief Engineer\, CEA* \n5.       Jani Vehkalahti\, CTO\, Wirepas \n6.       Atul Bali\, Director\, NSGM* \n7.       Yogendra V. SUMMARY:DoT-TSDSI Micro Workshop Series on ‘Advancing 5G towards 6G’ #Workshop 5: ‘Enhancing Security\, Efficiency and Performance in Beyond 5G Networks’ (May 12\,2023 Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:DoT-TSDSI joint workshop series on ‘Advancing 5G towards 6G’ aims to disseminate information about 3GPP Release 19 technology areas and timelines to the Indian technology ecosystem. The goal is to mobilize Indian Industry technologists and Academic researchers to actively participate and contribute to the ongoing and future work at 3GPP. \nThe fifth micro-workshop in the series\, was conducted in partnership with IIIT Bangalore\, focused on ‘Enhancing Security\, Efficiency and Performance in Beyond 5G Networks’. \nAbout this micro workshop: \nThe workshop introduced the audience to some of the state-of-the-art challenges and how to address them for designing beyond 5G wireless systems. The selected topics have the potential to be a part of 3GPP Release-19 and beyond releases and TSDSI’s New Item Proposals towards 6G. In particular\, the following topics were discussed in this workshop: \nLow-Complexity MIMO Receivers for High Mobility Applications – The conventional one-tap equalization designed for multicarrier waveforms does not work in high mobility scenarios due to the doubly-dispersive nature of the wireless channel\, demanding a sophisticated receiver design with very high computational complexity. This work exploits the inherent multi-banded structure of the channel and investigates a common framework to design low-complexity linear receivers for multicarrier waveform-based MIMO systems for high-mobility applications. \nSparsity-based channel estimation for IRS-aided mmWave MIMO systems– Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) is a promising technology suitable for mass deployment in future wireless networks owing to its cost-effective nature of realizing energy efficiency. Channel estimation\, one of the key steps to achieve performance gains of IRS assisted systems\, becomes challenging due to limited capabilities of the IRS elements. This work leverages the inherent spatial sparsity of mmWave channels to develop accurate channel estimation algorithms with low bandwidth overhead. \nOptimal Relay and Antenna Selection for PHY Layer Security– In large\, dynamic wireless networks\, classical cryptography might not be suitable due to problems in terms of key distribution and key management\, and computational complexity\, especially for energy-constrained IoT applications. This work exploits the randomness inherent in noisy wireless channels\, collectively referred to as Physical Layer Security\, to address the security challenges for a wireless network under an eavesdropping attack. The main focus of this talk will be based on the physical layer security enhancement by using multiple antenna and cooperative relaying techniques considering underlay spectrum sharing. \nSlicing and resource management in 5G Advanced RAN- Several 3GPP works have just started to investigate the challenges and potentials to enable the multi-service RAN thereby transitioning towards a service-oriented RAN architecture. The concept of network slicing has evolved to support the needs of the business through the specification of several service Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as data rate\, latency and reliability. Considering the limited radio resources and increasing bandwidth demand\, this talk investigates a novel real-time radio resource allocation and optimization methodologies to enhance the slice occupancy and slice QoS throughput in 5GAdvanced RAN. \nSchedule: 12 May 2023; 11:00 AM to 1 PM IST \nVenue: Hybrid (IIIT Bangalore & online) \nParticipation: Registrations are now closed. \nWorkshop Conveners: Dr Prem Singh (IIIT Bangalore)\, Dr Samar Shailendra (Intel) \nRecordings: \n\nProgram Schedule:   \n\n\n\nSESSION TIME (IST)\nTopic\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n1100 – 1110\nIntroduction\nSamar Shailendra\, Co-Chair\, TSDSI Roadmap Committee (Intel)\n\n\n1110 – 1120\nAbout IIITB\nDebabrata Das\, IIIT Bangalore\n\n\n1120 – 1140\nLow-Complexity MIMO Receivers for High Mobility Applications\nPrem Singh\, IIIT Bangalore\n\n\n1140 – 1155\nSparsity-based channel estimation for IRS-aided mmWave MIMO systems\nAmrita Mishra\, IIIT Bangalore\n\n\n1155 – 1210\nOptimal Relay and Antenna Selection for PHY Layer Security\nPriyanka Das\, IIIT Bangalore\n\n\n1210 – 1235\nSlicing and resource management in 5G Advanced RAN\nDebarata Das  and Jyotsna Bapat\, IIIT Bangalore\n\n\n1235 – 1250\n                                                        Polls and Q&A\n\n\n1250 – 1300\nClosing Remarks\nGuna B Shekar\, TSDSI\n\n\n\nWorkshop Contact: Akash Malik\, akash@tsdsi.in; Sonia Sachdeva Sharma\, sonia@tsdsi.in \nPlease click here to download the workshop flyer.

SUMMARY:World Telecom Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 - Awareness Workshop organised by TSDSI August 11\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) is held every four years and defines the next study period for ITU-T. It brings together industry leaders\, policymakers\, and experts from around the globe to address the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly evolving telecommunication landscape. WTSA serves as a critical platform for setting the agenda and shaping the future of international telecommunication standards. \nDOT/TEC in India are the main coordinators at National level for recommending new resolutions / Value additions to the existing work in the SGs of ITU-T and other related forums. \nWTSA-2024 is being hosted by the Department of Telecommunications\, Govt. of India in New Delhi\, India from 15 to 24 October 2024. Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC) is main focal point for coordination and compilation of various suggestions and inputs from India and aligning with Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) for WTSA. TSDSI proposes to contribute actively in this endeavour by mobilising its members to give inputs on various areas and resolutions. A task force has been formed at TSDSI to compile these inputs and suggestions for submitting to TEC. \nEarlier for WTSA’20 meeting which was held in Geneva during March 2022\, TSDSI had formed a WTSA Task Force to steer discussions on the Resolutions. Contributions were made to TEC on key resolutions\, including Bridging the Standardization Gap between developing and developed countries\, and the role of Open source in the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector. A delegation of 12 members nominated from TSDSI attended and actively took part in the discussions of WTSA 2020\, spanning all aspects of future networks including networks\, security\, services and applications. \nLooking forward to WTSA’24\, TSDSI organised an online WTSA Awareness workshop to create awareness and to promote increased participation and contributions to this important event. The workshop introduced the participants to TSDSI\, ITU and WTSA and then went on to explain the significance of the WTSA resolutions for researchers\, startups and industry. Guidelines for writing good WTSA resolution proposals were given with examples. \nLinks to workshop recordings and presentations made are available below. \nProgram Agenda \n\n\n\nTime (IST)\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n2:30 – 2:40 pm\nContext Setting\nAbhishek Thakur\, TSDSI WTSA’24 Task Force  (IDRBT)\n\n\n2:40 – 2:50 pm\nOpening Remarks\nSushil Kumar\, Vice Chair\, APT WTSA’24 (Telecom Engineering Centre)\n\n\n2:50 – 3:10 pm\nBasics of ITU and WTSA\nVishnu RAM OV\, Consultant\, (TSDSI)\n\n\n3:10 – 4:00 pm\nContributing to WTSA\nVishnu RAM OV\, Consultant\, (TSDSI)\n\n\n4:00 – 4:15 pm\nQ&A\n\n\n4:15 – 4:30 pm\nConcluding Remarks and Next Steps\nAvinash Agarwal\, Vice-Chair\, APT WTSA’24 WG3 on Regulatory/ Policy and Standardization Related Issues (Telecom Engineering Centre)\n\n\n\nRecordings: \n\nSchedule: 11 August 2023\, 02:30 – 04:30 PM IST \nVenue: Online over AIRMEET \nParticipation: Registrations are now closed. \nWorkshop Contact: Chandrakanta Rathore\, chandrakanta.rathore@tsdsi.in; Jaskirat Singh\, jaskirat.singh@tsdsi.in

SUMMARY:TSDSI SDR @ COMSNETS 2024 (January 7\, 2024)
DESCRIPTION:TSDSI has been championing standards driven research in India\, bridging the gap between Research\, IP and Standards. This will help India take a leadership position in the global standards arena and facilitate the monetization of IP. Standards play a crucial role in transforming research being carried out in institutes to be adopted for practical\, real world applications. Research & innovation motivates standardization\, and standardization of solutions requires further research & innovation\, thereby keeping this cycle active. \nIn alignment with this vision\, TSDSI organised the 3rd edition of Standards driven workshop @ COMSNETS 2024 on 7 January 2024 in Bengaluru. The objective of the workshop was to bring together innovative minds who are researching into networking and communication systems for exchanging ideas on topics that have potential for standardized solutions. It also helped to foster a better understanding of the multifaceted benefits that standards can bring about in areas such as AI\, Communications\, Cloud interoperability and many more. \nThe workshops had \n\nKeynote talks by expert speakers\nPresentations by authors of papers shortlisted for the workshop\nPanel discussion on “how to leverage Standards Driven Research in global standards forums”\n\nFollowing key takeaways emerged from the workshop deliberations: \n\nIt is important to identify the right fora with which the ongoing research and activities can be aligned.\nNew “joinees” need handholding and mentoring to help them “Read standards artifacts” and understand the ongoing standardization activities in various fora. \nAmong the recommendations for effectively leveraging standardization opportunities discussed in the workshop\, importance of “support” and “consensus” resonated among the delegates. The importance of attending meetings in person to achieve the above goals was also emphasized.\nAcademia can play the role of analysis of various alternative approaches or find solutions to problems which the industry may not have the patience to do. This may involve pre and post standards initiatives\, position papers and PoC. This may be an opportunity to do innovative research in academia and lead the SDR activities.\n\nWorkshop Co-Chairs: Satish Kanugovi (Nokia India)\, Arzad Alam Kherani (IIT Bhilai)\, Dhiman Saha (IIT Bhilai) \nProgram Agenda \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, 7 January 2024\n\n\nTime\nTitle\nSpeaker/Authors\n\n\n8:45-9:05\nRegistration\n\n\n9:05-9:10\nWelcome Remarks\nSatish K (Nokia India)\n\n\n9:10-10:00\nKeynote Talk: Transforming Research Concepts into Commercial Success: A Journey through Standards\nKiran Kuchi (IIT Hyderabad)\n\n\n10:00-10:40\nKeynote Talk: How to mess up a standardization opportunity?\nVishnu Ram OV (TSDSI)\n\n\n10:40-11:00\nPaper 1: A Framework for Design of Portable and Scalable Physical Layer in O-RAN\nMakarand Kulkarni; Pramit Biswas; Parag Naik; Anindya Saha\n\n\n11:00-11:30\nTea Break\n\n\n11:30-12:30\nKeynote Talk: Network Simulation of WiFi 6/7 using ns-3\nSumit Roy (University of Washington\, USA)\n\n\n12:30-12:50\nPaper 2: Parity Check Coded Super-MAC for reliability enhancements in Next-Generation Networks\nAbdul Mateen Ahmed; Aaqib Patel; Mohammed Zafar Ali Khan\n\n\n12:50-13:10\nPaper 3: Green 6G: Energy Awareness in Design\nRashmi Kamran; Shwetha Kiran; Pranav Jha; Prasanna Chaporkar\n\n\n13:10-14:00\nLunch Break\n\n\n14:00-14:40\nKeynote Talk: Democratising Technology using Open Source and Open Standards\nPamela Kumar (FSID\, IISc)\n\n\n14:40-15:00\nPaper 4: Evolution of NGN Control Plane for Future Telecommunications Networks\nRashmi Yadav; Rashmi Kamran; Pranav Jha; Shwetha Kiran; Abhay Karandikar\n\n\n15:00-15:20\nPaper 5: Hybrid Clarke’s Models for Fixed Wireless Deployments in Beyond-5G Systems\nVivek Chaudhary; Roshan S Sam; Abhinaba Dey; Sreenath Ramanath\n\n\n15:20-15:40\nPaper 6: Standardization aspects of Caching and Coded Delivery in MEC integrated 5G system\nLalhruaizela Chhangte; Ashish Singh Patel\n\n\n15:40-16:00\nTea Break\n\n\n16:00-16:50\nKeynote Talk: Decoding the 5G NR Radio specifications\nSubhas Mondal (HFCL Limited)\n\n\n16:50-17:30\nPanel Discussion: How to leverage Standards Driven Research in global standards forums\nModerator: Satish K (Nokia India) \nPanelists:\n• Niranth Amogh (Nokia)\n• Vishnu Ram OV (TSDSI)\n• N. SUMMARY:Workshop on “Standards-driven Research”@NCC 2024 on 28 February 2024 at IIT Madras
DESCRIPTION:TSDSI has been championing standards driven research in the India ecosystem so as to channelise research -> IP -> Standards that will result in India taking a leadership position on the global standards arena and also monetization of IP.  We have been conducting workshops on this theme (SdDR) regularly in the community – including in IEEE ANTS\, COMSNETS and NCC conferences. \nA Standards-driven Research Workshop was organised by TSDSI under the aegis of NCC 2024 on 28 February 2024 at IIT Madras campus. Its goal was to engage with academia & research community and motivating them to take up research topics that can lead to downstream development of standards. This will help channelise the vast research expertise in India and in seeding the IP created during research into standards\, thus opening avenues for monetizing the same. This will also help to discuss topics that can be candidates for contributing to standards. \nThe workshop featured talks on research topics with a potential for standardization\,  government initiatives for promoting research leading to contribution to standards\, Case studies of research-based contributions to standards\, O-RAN standardisation etc. A panel discussion was also conducted on “Need for SDR and mechanisms available for the same”. \nHere are few key conclusions from the deliberations of the workshop:  \nHaving established the importance and benefits of standards driven research\, several suggestions were put forth on the approach to be taken. Use Case analysis can be taken as a starting point. Another approach could be to conduct a literature survey of standards followed by a prior art search to identify potential topics of research in the “gap areas”. A database of research questions may be created. A few areas in which topics with potential for contribution to standards exist were also discussed. It was recommended to establish Centres of Excellence with a specific mandate for conducting Standards driven research in different parts of the country. The industry was encouraged to leverage academia for carrying out research. CSR funds may be channelised for SDR activities. \n  \nDetails of the Workshop are as follows: \nWorkshop Co-Chairs: Pranav Jha (IIT Bombay)\, Radha Krishna Ganti (IIT Madras) \nSchedule: 28 February 2024\, 09:00 to 17:30 IST \nVenue: IIT Madras (in-person) \nParticipation: Registrations are now closed. \nPlease click here to view photographs of the workshop. \nFor more details of NCC 2024\, please click here \nProgram Agenda \n\n\n\nTIME (IST)\nSESSION NAME\nSPEAKERS\n\n\n09:00 – 09:15\nWelcome remarks and context setting\nPranav Jha (IIT Bombay)\n\n\n09:15 – 11:00\nResearch topics with a potential for standardization\n Ramya T.
