SUMMARY:Workshop on "Visible light for Broadband Communications: Current Research & Standardization" (March 25-26\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:IIIT Delhi Center of Excellence on LiFi supported by India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project is organizing a workshop on “Visible light for Broadband Communications: Current Research & Standardization” on 25-26 March 2021 from 9:30 AM IST onwards. \nThe two-day workshop will feature invited speakers from academia\, industry\, start-ups\, and government concerns\, both from India and the EU. Due to the ongoing pandemic situation\, the workshop will be held in a virtual-mode. \nBackground: \nA Center of Excellence (CoE) on LiFi has been established in IIIT Delhi under the purview of the India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project. As a part of this project\, the CoE will not only design relevant courses on LiFi\, but will also facilitate capacity building by supporting research collaborations and exchange of experts between India and the EU. To kickstart the activities of the CoE\, this workshop is being organized. \nAbout the Workshop: \nVisible Light Communication technology will be most useful in indoor environments as it will be able to provide large bandwidths. This will also be very useful for providing high bandwidth last mile connectivity in remote and rural areas. \nThis workshop will mainly focus on the requirements and challenges of deployment in such scenarios. The inputs gathered from the workshop will help in working out innovative solutions. The test bed will enable such innovations which can be contributed to standards. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI is proud to announce a session on “Looking Beyond 5G – Path to 6G” in Convergence India 2021 \nAbout the Session: \nITU has recently approved three Radio Interface technologies – 3GPP 5G-SRIT\, 3GPP 5G-RIT and TSDSI’s 5Gi conforming to the International Mobile Telecommunications 2020 (IMT-2020)\, aka 5G. These will now be used for global commercial deployments. 5G is slated to become the backbone of tomorrow’s digital economy – driven by an ecosystem of near ubiquitous\, intelligent at the edge\, connected devices in various verticals\, apart from realization of AR/VR based applications for users.  Learnings and feedback from these deployments will continue to tune the standards in the coming days and shape the technology evolution path. \nMeanwhile\, the research community has already begun deliberations on technologies for the next decade – looking beyond 5G and 6G\, from 2018 onwards. Academic Institutes and Research agencies\, technology companies and fast-growing breed of deep technology startups in Europe\, America and Asia Pacific regions are involved in focus activities to explore the use cases and potential technologies. \nGlobal Standards forums\, (including ITU and 3GPP) are spearheading efforts in this area. Topics such as holographic type communications\, extremely fast response in critical situations\, high-precision communication demands of emerging market verticals\, large intelligent surfaces\, waveforms\, free space optics\, Non-terrestrial networks are some areas under deliberation. Mittal did his graduation in Electronics and Communications Engineering in 1976 from Indian Institute of Technology\, Roorkee. He also holds a Diploma in Management. He has a career of over 44 years in the field of Telecommunications. \nWhile he started his career in R&D at Indian Telephone Industries Ltd\, later after joining Department of Telecom (DoT)\, Government of India he has worked in variety of domains like Satellite Communication\, OFC\, Microwave\, Mobile Networks\, Switching Systems\, Network Management\, Licensing\, Regulation\, Standards\, Testing and Certification etc. He has headed the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC)\, the technology arm of the Department of Telecommunications. He has represented the Government of India in various bilateral and multilateral international meetings. \nCurrently he is associated with TSDSI as Advisor with special focus on standardisation in wireless and wireline systems and handles standards related activities of TSDSI in 3GPP and ITU-R. \nSpeaker: John Cosmas\, Professor of Multimedia Systems in the College of Engineering\, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University London \nSpeaker Bio: John Cosmas (M’1989-SM’2008) received the BEng degree in Electronic Engineering in 1978 from Liverpool University and the Ph.D. degree in 1986 from Imperial College\, University of London. He is currently a Professor of Multimedia Systems in the College of Engineering\, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University London. He leads the Intelligent Digital Economy and Society Research Centre and is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting. \nHis research interests are concerned with the development of Multimedia Networked Systems applied to Future of Broadcasting\, Cellular Communications\, 2D/3D digital video/graphics media and the synergies between these technologies towards their application towards the benefit of the smart homes\, cities environment\, health and societies. \nHe has participated in twelve EU (Horizon 2020\, IST\, RACE and ACTS) research projects and two EPSRC funded research projects since 1986 and he has led three of these (CISMUNDUS\, PLUTO and 3D MURALE). He has graduated 35 PhD and 4 MPhil students and published over 89 research journal papers and 198 conference papers. He leads a research team of 5 PhD students\, whose research is concerned with management of heterogeneous Visible Light Communications and millimetre wave networks for low latency broadband in buildings\, Internet of Things for Health and Safety systems in hospitals 3D MIMO and efficient Software Defined Networks architectures. \nSpeaker: Anand Srivastava\, Professor in ECE department\, IIIT Delhi \nSpeaker Bio: Anand Srivastava did his M.Tech. and Ph.D. from IIT Delhi and is currently working in IIIT Delhi as Professor in ECE department. Before joining IIIT Delhi\, he was Dean & Professor in School of Computing and Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Mandi\, HP\, India and also Adjunct faculty at IIT Delhi. Prior to this\, he was with Alcatel-Lucent-Bell Labs\, India as solution architect for access and core networks. Before joining Alcatel Lucent\, he had a long stint (∼ 20 years) with Center for Development of Telematics (CDOT)\, a telecom research center of Govt. of India where he was Director and member of CDOT Board. During his stay in CDOT\, he provided technical leadership and motivation to extremely qualified team of engineers engaged in the development of national level projects in the areas of Telecom Security Systems\, Network Management System\, Intelligent Networks\, Operations Support Systems\, Access Networks (GPON) and Optical Technology based products. Majority of these projects were completed successfully and commercially deployed in the public network. \nHe was also closely involved with ITU-T\, Geneva in Study Group 15 and represented India for various optical networking standards meetings. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in association with Cloud Computing Innovation Council of India (CCICI) and ESDS Software Solutions is organising an Online event to release the ‘Cloud Interoperability Standards Reference Report‘ on 01st October 2020 (Thursday) from 11:00 to 13:00 pm IST. \nCloud computing is dominated by proprietary APIs and processes for a user or application interaction with the cloud leading to cloud API propagation and creation of issues such as vendor lock-in\, non-portability and inflexibility to use multiple vendors\, inability to switch between different vendors and reverting to the organization’s own data center resources seamlessly. However\, creating standards can accelerate the growth of the cloud market by reducing fears of vendor lock-in\, and would thereby be beneficial to Cloud Service Providers as well. Apart from providing the flexibility to the users of cloud services and propelling the economic growth\, development of Interoperability and Portability standards shall go a long way in supporting the digitization initiatives of the Indian government. \nTSDSI was mandated by DoT in 22nd December 2017 to work on standards of Cloud interoperability and portability. TSDSI worked with CCICI jointly on development of the Cloud Interoperability & Portability (CIP) Standards for multiple number of use cases. The first report on ‘Cloud Interoperability Standards Reference Report’ is being released at this event. There is also a shift in favour of standards’-based products and solutions in the market place.  In this scenario\, Intellectual Property and Standard Essential Patents have assumed tremendous significance in the overall composition of product offerings. \nThere is a need to educate and raise awareness on IPRs and SEPs within the research and Techpreneurs community\, especially in the SME segment. \nTSDSI\, India’s Telecom SDO\, partnered with Jindal School of Banking & Finance and Department of Telecommunication\, Govt. of India to organise a Webinar on “SEPs and IPRs in the Tech Driven Society – Opportunities for SMEs” on 16 July 2020\, where an overview of IPRs\, SEPs from a SME was shared by Prof. Ashish Bhardwaj\, Dean and Executive Director\, Office of Rankings\, Benchmarking and Institutional Transformation (ORBIT)\, Jindal School of Banking & Finance. \nAbout the Webinar: \nProf. Bharadwaj explained the linkages between patent rights\, technology innovation\, and the creation of wealth for shared prosperity of societies and India’s experience in this context. He further discussed licensing of SEPs on Fair\, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) terms focusing on India and the potential of and opportunities for the Indian SMEs and Startup sector in leveraging IP for technological advancement and to climb up the global technology value chain. \nThe webinar was moderated by Mr Kishore Babu DDG – Standards\, Research and Innovation\, Department of Telecommunication\, Govt. of India \nSpeaker: \n \nProfessor (Dr) Ashish Bharadwaj serves as the Dean of the Jindal School of Banking & Finance\, which was established in 2018. Professor Bharadwaj also serves as Executive Director of the University Office for Rankings\, Benchmarking and Institutional Transformation (ORBIT). He is also Founding Director of Jindal Initiative on Research on Intellectual Property and Competition (JIRICO)\, which is the largest academic think-tank within a university in India that focuses on technology innovation\, market competition and patents for shared prosperity of society. Professor Bharadwaj holds B.A. Honours degree in Economics from the University of Delhi and M.Sc. Economics from Madras School of Economics\, College of Engineering\, Anna University in India. He was awarded the Max Planck Society Doctoral Fellowship to pursue research at the prestigious Max Planck Institute for Innovation & Competition in Munich (Germany) and was subsequently awarded a Ph.D. by the Max Planck Institute and the Ludwig Maximillian’s University of Munich (LMU). Professor Bharadwaj writes on the role of technology innovation\, intellectual property and competition in shaping societies; technical standards and patent licensing; national IPR & science-technology-innovation policies. His other areas of interest are the interface of finance\, law and new technology. DESCRIPTION:2nd TSDSI-TEPC Workshop on “Standardisation for Developing Countries”  \n(10 February 2020\, 17:30-20:30 hrs\, The Ashok\, New Delhi) \n Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) has been set up by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Ministry of Communications\, Government of India for promotion of exports of Telecom Equipment and Services. It has played a key facilitating role in developing strong trade relationships between India and emerging economies\, including countries from Africa\, Sahara\, South East Asia\, South Asia and South America. \nDeveloping countries too\, like India\, are mostly dependent on imports for their needs of telecom equipment and services. While procurement of global standards-based equipment gives them some flexibility in choice of vendors\, the larger question is whether the global telecom standards cater to the operating conditions or use cases that might be specific to them. For this to happen\, it is important that the voice of developing countries be heard in the global standards making organisations like ITU\, 3GPP and oneM2M\, to name just a few. \nTelecommunications Standards Development Society\, India\, (TSDSI)\,  founded in January 2014 with full encouragement and support of Government of India and having a membership base representing all segments of telecom ecosystem in the country\, is very much interested in being the voice of India and the developing world in international telecom standards making. TSDSI has been a regular in the SG5 meetings of ITU-R and made contributions to IMT-2020 standards which should help cost effective roll out of 5G services in rural India and many other developing countries with similar conditions. TSDSI is also an organization partner (OP) of 3GPP and Partner type 1 of oneM2M. \nTSDSI wishes greater engagement with the developing countries for sharing of knowledge and experience for mutual benefit. TSDSI is also working with TEPC to learn from their experience and leverage their excellent network in telecom ecosystems of the developing world. \n3GPP has designated TSDSI to report progress on “Topics for 5G NR (New Radio) deployment in developing countries. It has been decided that TSDSI will conduct periodic workshops on “Standardisation for Developing Countries” in partnership with TEPC\, at regular intervals to exchange views on adoption of 5G and beyond technologies in the developing economies regions. \nThe first such workshop was held on 14 October 2019 in New Delhi\, where activities of Global standards forums\, TSDSI and Developing economies perspectives were discussed. Rural broadband technologies to cater to the unique requirements in developing countries was an area of common interest extensively discussed. This submission will deliver\, in addition to the ultra-fast\, low-latency mobile internet and next-generation IoT services in both cellular and mm-wave spectral bands common to all 5G candidate standards\, an additional technological enhancement that has the ability to provide broadband connectivity to rural users using ultra-long range cell sites. It will ensure 100% of India’s villages can be covered from towers located at panchayat villages where Bharatnet reaches\, whereas nearly a third of such neighbouring villages would be out of coverage otherwise. It exploits a new transmit waveform that increases cell range developed by research institutions in India and supported by some Indian companies. \nIndependent Evaluation Groups\, including TCOE India and 5GIF are in the process of evaluating the candidate IMT 2020 submissions. The upcoming WP 5D meeting #34 scheduled in Geneva on Feb 19- 26\, 2020\, will discuss the evaluation reports of the RITs. It is important that as country we have common evaluation reports. \nIn order to bring about a common view\, DoT\, TCOE India\, COAI and TSDSI organised a workshop on 20 January 2002 to share updates on the Evaluation activities and discuss plans for the remaining 4 steps of ITU process for defining the IMT2020 standard. A follow on workshop to deliberate further on these topics was organised on 7 February 2020 in Sanchar Bhawan\, New Delhi from 14:30 to 16:00.
