DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in partnership with IIT Bombay\, organised a live webinar on 9th July 2021 from 1600 to 1710 IST\, to present an overview of the DoT sponsored project ‘Indigenous 5G Test-bed’. The webinar provided an overview of the project along with IIT Bombay’s contribution towards the testbed. \nAbout the Webinar: The webinar provided an overview of the end-to-end 5G testbed\, developed indigenously by a consortium of eight leading Indian academic and research institutes. 5G promises much higher data rates and new applications to take telecommunication networks to the next level in near future. The goal of this testbed is to develop the key components of 5G networks from the ground up\, in order to make them available for experimentation and further development to researchers\, startups\, industry and other players in the Indian telecommunications ecosystem. \nThe 5G testbed team at IIT Bombay has led the development of the 5G core subsystem\, consisting of components that interface with the radio access network and provide registration\, session management\, high-speed data forwarding and other core network services in the 5G network. A key feature of the 5G network is a unified core supporting a variety of access technologies. Wi-Fi is one of the most popular wireless access technologies today and it is expected to be an integral component of the 5G network too. Along with the Core Network functions\, the IIT Bombay team has also developed components to integrate Wi-Fi based Non-3GPP Access Network with the 5G Core. \nThis webinar begun with a brief overview of 5G\, with a specific focus on the components developed at IIT Bombay and then the design of the 5G testbed components developed by IIT Bombay\, the supported features\, and the progress made so far was described followed by a discussion on the ways in which users can leverage this work to further their research and development agenda in the 5G technology. \nSpeakers \nSpeaker #1:  Mr. A.K. Mittal \nTopic: Introduction of TSDSI and 5Gi Standards  \nSpeaker’s Bio: Shri A.K. Mittal is associated with TSDSI as Advisor with special focus on standardisation in wireless and wireline systems and handles standards related activities of TSDSI in 3GPP and ITU-R. \nHe began his career in R&D at Indian Telephone Industries Ltd and later joined Department of Telecommunication (DoT)\, Government of India where he worked in a variety of domains like Satellite Communication\, OFC\, Microwave\, Mobile Networks\, Switching Systems\, Network Management\, Licensing\, Regulation\, Standards\, Testing and Certification etc. He was Head\, Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC)\, the technology arm of the Department of Telecommunications. He has represented the Government of India in various bilateral and multilateral international meetings. \nHe did his graduation in Electronics and Communications Engineering in 1976 from Indian Institute of Technology\, Roorkee. He also holds a Diploma in Management. He has a career of over 44 years in the field of Telecommunications. \nSpeaker #2: Prof. Mythili Vutukuru\, IIT Bombay \nTopic: Overview of the 5G Core in the 5G Testbed \nSpeaker’s Bio: Mythili Vutukuru is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay. Before joining IITB in 2013\, she obtained her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010 and 2006 respectively. After her Ph.D.\, she worked at Movik Networks\, a startup in the telecom space\, for 3 years before joining IITB. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI is proud to announce the 29th webinar in the knowledge sharing series under the aegis of the India-EU Partnership Project on Collaboration for ICT Standardisation on “OpenAirInterface: Democratizing innovation in the 5G era”. \nAbstract: \nOpenAirInterface (OAI) is an open-source project that implements the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) technology on general purpose x86 computing hardware and Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Software Defined Radio (SDR) cards like the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). It makes it possible to deploy and operate a 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network today and 5G New Radio (NR) networks at a very low cost. Moreover\, the open-source code can be adapted to different use cases and deployment and new functionality can be implemented\, making it an ideal platform for both industrial and academic research. The OAI Software Alliance (OSA) is a non-profit consortium fostering a community of industrial as well as research contributors. It also developed the OAI public license which is an open source license that allows contributors to implement their own patented technology without having to relinquish their intellectual property rights. This new clause is in agreement with the Fair\, Reasonable And Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) clause found in 3GPP. \nIn this talk\, we are going to describe the current OAI state-of-the-art of the development\, the OAI community and development process\, as well as the OAI public license and its usage by academia and industry. \nModerator: Mr Prakash R\, Technical Expert\, Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) \nModerator Bio: Mr. Prakash R holds the designation of “Technical Expert” in Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). He has been working as a researcher in the telecom industry for the past 27 years. His current interests include Software-intensive Telecom Systems\, Wireless Networks (4G/5G/6G)\, Data Networks\, Cloud Computing\, Software Defined Networks\, Open Source and Standardization. \nMr. Prakash completed his B.Tech at R.V.College of Engineering\, Bangalore in 1993. He has been working in C-DOT since 1994 in various roles as a Research Engineer\, Team Leader\, Senior Program Manager\, Business Unit Head/Division manager and is currently holding an Executive position. He has worked on various aspects of telecommunications including Digital Switching Systems\, Voice-over-IP\, Internet Telephony\, Fault-tolerant Systems\, Software-intensive Telecom systems\, Organizational Processes (CMMI)\, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)\, Organizational Change Management and creating Marketing department in C-DOT. \nHe is currently the coordinator for the following programs: 4G/LTE Radio Access Network\, 5G and ERP Implementation at C-DOT. He is also responsible for C-DOT Academic Research Engagement (CARE) Program and other R&D collaborations. He is a member of the technology roadmap and strategic planning group in C-DOT. \nHe is an IEEE Senior Member\, IETE Fellow and ACM Member and also serves as Vice Chair in the Study Group Networks of TSDSI. \nSpeaker: Florian Kaltenberger\, Assistant Professor\, EURECOM \nSpeaker Bio: Florian Kaltenberger is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Systems Department at EURECOM (France). He received his Diploma degree (Dipl.-Ing.) and his PhD both in Technical Mathematics from the Vienna University of Technology 2002 and 2007 respectively. \nHe is part of the management team for the real-time open-source 5G platform OpenAirInterface.org and the general secretary of the OAI software alliance. He is coordinating the developments of the OAI radio access network project group\, which delivered support for 5G non-standalone access in 2020 and for 5G standalone access in 2021. He also manages several research projects (industrial and academic) around the platform and teaches a course on radio engineering. His research interests include 5G and MIMO systems at large\, software defined radio\, signal processing for wireless communications\, as well as channel modeling and simulation. \nIn 2013\, he received the Neal Shepherd Best Propagation Award for the Journal article “Experimental characterization and modelling of outdoor-to-indoor and indoor-to-indoor distributed channels” (IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology\, Vol.59\, N°5\, June 2010). DESCRIPTION:India is in the grip of a COVID -19 Pandemic spiral with positive cases continuing to rise and new mutations being discovered. Medical infrastructure is overstretched. A large percentage of COVID casualties in this second wave are because of lack of oxygen– a situation that could have been prevented in most cases by timely support through oxygen concentrators or ventilators in extreme cases. Oxygen concentrators have become the crucial first-aid tool in this battle.  However\, there is a severe shortage of concentrators in the market with the sudden surge in demand from end users\, RWAs and small nursing homes/hospitals. \nThe need of the hour is to have “Affordable” concentrators and ventilators that can be mass produced within the country\, backed by a robust supply chain. SUMMARY:TSDSI-TIA Workshop on “5G Networks: Strategies for Enabling Standards Driven Technologies & Innovation” (April 7 & 9\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:India has staked a claim to development of global 5G standards thanks to contributions by TSDSI. TSDSI members actively contributed towards drafting of the “Making India 5G Ready” report of Department of Telecommunication – 5G High Level Forum. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\, an UN body that is setting requirements for IMT 2020 (aka 5G)\, adopted the Low-Mobility-Large-Cell (LMLC) use case proposed by TSDSI as a mandatory 5G requirement in 2017. This addresses the problem of rural coverage by mandating large cell sizes in rural terrains\, scattered and/or sparsely populated areas in developing as well as developed countries. 5Gi\, the first ever Mobile Radio Interface Technology contribution from India\, developed by TSDSI has recently been approved as one of the 3 Radio Interface Technologies of IMT-2020\, paving the way for 100% broadband connectivity in India. TSDSI has also begun work on technologies beyond 5G. \nTIA has a rich history of developing and establishing global standards which are critical to the deployment of various communications networks.  In particular\, our technology standards are used for the design\, construction\, and maintenance of towers for antennas\, as well as for the design and deployment of cabling infrastructure\, both copper and fiber\, for homes\, commercial buildings\, and data centers.  These standards are all being updated by their respective engineering committees to enable and support the 5G environment.  In addition\, TIA’s Technology Programs are focused on enabling industry advancements for Smart Buildings and Data Centers and our program participant working groups are addressing the unique needs for building out 5G and IoT infrastructure for public and private spaces.  TL 9000 is our globally recognized process-based quality management system standard relied on by service providers and suppliers for deploying all ICT equipment and services\, including 5G and IoT.  Our new Supply Chain security standard will provide a similar verifiable\, process-based standard for ensuring the security of the 5G supply chain. \nDigital communications technologies are playing an increasingly indispensable role in our lives\, which is expected to be further enhanced by 5G. 5G will play a critical role in the emerging environment – be it remote surgeries\, Low-cost Automation\, Smart manufacturing\, M2M. DESCRIPTION:IIIT Delhi Center of Excellence on LiFi supported by India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project is organizing a workshop on “Visible light for Broadband Communications: Current Research & Standardization” on 25-26 March 2021 from 9:30 AM IST onwards. \nThe two-day workshop will feature invited speakers from academia\, industry\, start-ups\, and government concerns\, both from India and the EU. He is currently a Professor of Multimedia Systems in the College of Engineering\, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University London. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in association with Cloud Computing Innovation Council of India (CCICI) and ESDS Software Solutions is organising an Online event to release the ‘Cloud Interoperability Standards Reference Report‘ on 01st October 2020 (Thursday) from 11:00 to 13:00 pm IST. \nCloud computing is dominated by proprietary APIs and processes for a user or application interaction with the cloud leading to cloud API propagation and creation of issues such as vendor lock-in\, non-portability and inflexibility to use multiple vendors\, inability to switch between different vendors and reverting to the organization’s own data center resources seamlessly. However\, creating standards can accelerate the growth of the cloud market by reducing fears of vendor lock-in\, and would thereby be beneficial to Cloud Service Providers as well. Apart from providing the flexibility to the users of cloud services and propelling the economic growth\, development of Interoperability and Portability standards shall go a long way in supporting the digitization initiatives of the Indian government. \nTSDSI was mandated by DoT in 22nd December 2017 to work on standards of Cloud interoperability and portability. TSDSI worked with CCICI jointly on development of the Cloud Interoperability & Portability (CIP) Standards for multiple number of use cases. DESCRIPTION:2nd TSDSI-TEPC Workshop on “Standardisation for Developing Countries”  \n(10 February 2020\, 17:30-20:30 hrs\, The Ashok\, New Delhi) \n Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) has been set up by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Ministry of Communications\, Government of India for promotion of exports of Telecom Equipment and Services. It has played a key facilitating role in developing strong trade relationships between India and emerging economies\, including countries from Africa\, Sahara\, South East Asia\, South Asia and South America. \nDeveloping countries too\, like India\, are mostly dependent on imports for their needs of telecom equipment and services. While procurement of global standards-based equipment gives them some flexibility in choice of vendors\, the larger question is whether the global telecom standards cater to the operating conditions or use cases that might be specific to them. For this to happen\, it is important that the voice of developing countries be heard in the global standards making organisations like ITU\, 3GPP and oneM2M\, to name just a few. \nTelecommunications Standards Development Society\, India\, (TSDSI)\,  founded in January 2014 with full encouragement and support of Government of India and having a membership base representing all segments of telecom ecosystem in the country\, is very much interested in being the voice of India and the developing world in international telecom standards making. TSDSI has been a regular in the SG5 meetings of ITU-R and made contributions to IMT-2020 standards which should help cost effective roll out of 5G services in rural India and many other developing countries with similar conditions. TSDSI is also an organization partner (OP) of 3GPP and Partner type 1 of oneM2M. \nTSDSI wishes greater engagement with the developing countries for sharing of knowledge and experience for mutual benefit. TSDSI is also working with TEPC to learn from their experience and leverage their excellent network in telecom ecosystems of the developing world. \n3GPP has designated TSDSI to report progress on “Topics for 5G NR (New Radio) deployment in developing countries. It has been decided that TSDSI will conduct periodic workshops on “Standardisation for Developing Countries” in partnership with TEPC\, at regular intervals to exchange views on adoption of 5G and beyond technologies in the developing economies regions. \nThe first such workshop was held on 14 October 2019 in New Delhi\, where activities of Global standards forums\, TSDSI and Developing economies perspectives were discussed. Rural broadband technologies to cater to the unique requirements in developing countries was an area of common interest extensively discussed. DESCRIPTION:DoT TCOE India TSDSI COAI Workshop on IMT2020\, 7 February 2020 14:30-16:00 hrs\,  \n13th Floor\, DoT Conference Room\, Sanchar Bhawan\, New Delhi \nTSDSI RIT submission on IMT2020 has been accepted for evaluation as an IMT2020 Standard at the ITU WP-5D Meeting #33 in Geneva held during December 10-13\, 2019. This submission will deliver\, in addition to the ultra-fast\, low-latency mobile internet and next-generation IoT services in both cellular and mm-wave spectral bands common to all 5G candidate standards\, an additional technological enhancement that has the ability to provide broadband connectivity to rural users using ultra-long range cell sites. It will ensure 100% of India’s villages can be covered from towers located at panchayat villages where Bharatnet reaches\, whereas nearly a third of such neighbouring villages would be out of coverage otherwise. It exploits a new transmit waveform that increases cell range developed by research institutions in India and supported by some Indian companies. \nIndependent Evaluation Groups\, including TCOE India and 5GIF are in the process of evaluating the candidate IMT 2020 submissions. The upcoming WP 5D meeting #34 scheduled in Geneva on Feb 19- 26\, 2020\, will discuss the evaluation reports of the RITs. It is important that as country we have common evaluation reports. \nIn order to bring about a common view\, DoT\, TCOE India\, COAI and TSDSI organised a workshop on 20 January 2002 to share updates on the Evaluation activities and discuss plans for the remaining 4 steps of ITU process for defining the IMT2020 standard. A follow on workshop to deliberate further on these topics was organised on 7 February 2020 in Sanchar Bhawan\, New Delhi from 14:30 to 16:00. What does the Indian capacity crunch look like and what are the local coverage limitations? Assessing what role Massive MIMO will play\, assessing gains and if this is enough to warrant investment in this highly complex technology. Considering current challenges in providing rural connectivity\, how can we leverage technology evolution to provide self- sustaining solutions for rural connectivity? Assessing challenges and opportunities in providing rural connectivity with 5G technology. SUMMARY:DoT-TCOE India-TSDSI Workshop on “IMT2020 Status Updates” 20 Jan 2020 in New Delhi (20 January\, 2020: New Delhi)
DESCRIPTION:TSDSI RIT submission on IMT2020 has been accepted for evaluation as an IMT2020 Standard at the ITU WP-5D Meeting #33 in Geneva held during December 10-13\, 2019. This submission will deliver\, in addition to the ultra-fast\, low-latency mobile internet and next-generation IoT services in both cellular and mm-wave spectral bands common to all 5G candidate standards\, an additional  technological enhancement that has the ability to provide broadband connectivity to rural users using ultra-long range cell sites. It will ensure 100% of India’s villages can be covered from towers located at panchayat villages where Bharatnet reaches\, whereas nearly a third of such neighbouring villages would be out of coverage otherwise. It exploits a new transmit waveform that increases cell range developed by research institutions in India and supported by some Indian companies. \nIndependent Evaluation Groups\, including TCOE India and 5GIF are in the process of evaluating the candidate IMT 2020 submissions. The upcoming WP 5D meeting #34 scheduled in Geneva on Feb 19-26\, 2020\, will discuss the evaluation reports of the RITs.
