SUMMARY:Drone Connectivity\, Operations and Standards - TSDSI BIS Joint Online Workshop (October 4\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in partnership with BIS organized a workshop on Drone Connectivity\, Operations and Standards on 4th October 2021\, 0930-1330 IST. \nContext: \nLong range connectivity offered by telecom networks are a key to enabling Drone operations in real world use cases. This includes beyond Line of Sight operations\, multi-drone operations\, connecting to network compute and intelligence\, monitoring etc. Standards are the essential enabler for unlocking the promise and potential of Drone applications and ecosystem. \nTSDSI has published a technical report on Drone Communication Services Support in Cellular Networks (TSDSI TR 6007 V1.0.0). This report captures India specific flight requirements during takeoff\, in-flight and post-flight operations. It also includes the requirements on the connectivity aspects between drones and 3GPP cellular network and recommendations for using Digital Sky  platform [Ref: DGCA RPAS Guidance manual]\, a regulatory framework from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)\, India for seamless and secure operations of Drones in Indian airspace. \nTSDSI members are now carrying out a study on UAV assisted Cloud RAN for 5G and beyond (SI83).  \nBIS has taken the initiative of formulating standards for drones in the country. Initial drafts have been formulated with contributions from several academicians\, industry stakeholders\, entrepreneurs and committee members of UAV Systems Subcommittee constituted by BIS under the convenorship of Prof. S.N. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI and IIT Delhi jointly organized the “MEC 5G Hackathon: The MEC 5G Challenge” on 24 September 2021 at 1500 – 1730 hrs IST. A research project entitled “Building an end-to-end 5G Test Bed” has been executed as a multi-institute collaborative project with participation from eight institutes- IIT Bombay\, IIT Delhi\, IIT Madras\, IIT Kanpur\, IIT Hyderabad\, IISc Bangalore\, CEWiT and SAMEER. Every institute has contributed in a complementary manner to the test bed\, based on their research interests and expertise. \nMEC Hackathon: MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing) can serve many key 5G use cases. Most of them are related to application scenarios specifically targeted to vertical markets of the 5G era. The purpose of this was to demonstrate the usage of the MEC system as an enabler for different use cases and business objectives\, helping all stakeholders to develop a diverse\, open MEC ecosystem. A research project titled “Building an end to end 5G Testbed” has been executed as a multi-institute collaborative project with participation from eight institutes- IIT Bombay\, IIT Delhi\, IIT Hyderabad\, IIT Madras\, IIT Kanpur\, IISc Bangalore\, CEWiT and SAMEER. Each one has contributed to the testbed in a complementary manner based on the expertise and interest of each institute. \nTestbed Initiative at IIT Delhi: With the world racing towards 5th generation broadband wireless technologies on all fronts\, it is a crucial phase for telecom R&D and product development in India\, considered one of the three largest telecom markets of the world. 5G Research and Standardization is reaching its global peak\, and technology demonstration and testbeds have started gaining momentum. With a number of Government initiatives such as smart cities\, Digital India and BharatNet depending heavily on the communication infrastructure\, early leads by India in 5G technology development and deployments are very crucial to the country. It is also a golden opportunity to close the gap in telecom manufacturing in the country. Faculty and research scholars at IIT Delhi are developing innovative solutions in areas of i) Energy Harvesting in IoT systems; ii) Security; iii) Light Fidelity; iv) Cost Effective Air pollution monitoring system; v) Multi Access Edge Computing with Haptics application; vi) Selective Algorithms in MIMO. We then investigate the problems for the VLC MAC along with the ongoing research activities and standardization. The optical design procedure includes non-sequential ray tracing\, the mapping method\, and the edge-ray principle for focusing non-paraxial rays. Optical ray-tracing simulations with realistic models are used for model validation in COMSOL Multiphysics®. \n\n\n\nDemo#2 \nVLC Tx and Rx: (by Vaibhav)\n14:20\n14:40\n\nDemonstration of Li-Fi downlink by transferring a sine signal between LED (Tx) and photodetector (Rx). This acts as a frontend of the transmitter and receiver of the Li-Fi link. \n\n\n\nDemo#3 \nVLC design in FPGA   \n(by Ankit and Krishnadeep)\n14:40\n15:00\n\nIn this demo\, we demonstrate pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) schemes used for the Li-Fi network over FPGA. The audio signal or a Psuedo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) is used to input this system. The ZYNQ Ultrascale+ Xillinx FPGA boards have been used with ADC/DAC card (Abacco FMC150) to implement this scheme. \n\n\n\nDemo#4 \nVLC in USRP (by Dr Arun)\n15:00\n15:20\n\nThis demo aims to design a physical layer of a simplex Li-Fi link that achieves a high data rate. The physical layer integrates the host computer\, transmitter\, and receiver. The transmitter and receiver are designed using Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) using software-defined radio concepts. Digital modulation techniques like BPSK\, QPSK\, QAM 16 have been developed and tested. We demonstrate the QPSK modulation scheme through USRP\, which achieves up to 5 Mbps data rate. \n\n\n\nDemo#5 \nVLC uplink (by Mayank)\n  \n15:20\n  \n15:40\n\nDemonstration of Li-Fi uplink by enabling the communication link between the two FPGA boards (ZCU102 ultrascale+) using PCIe uplink modules. DESCRIPTION:Telecommunications Standards Development Society\, India (TSDSI) has been promoting the concept of “Standards Driven Research” in order to synergise the research in our technology institutes with creation of an IP pool that can be translated to Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). Achieving prominence in Global Standards Development is a key indicator of emergence of India from a “late consumer of mature technology” to becoming an “globally competitive innovator in emerging technologies”. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in partnership with IIT Bombay\, organised a live webinar on 9th July 2021 from 1600 to 1710 IST\, to present an overview of the DoT sponsored project ‘Indigenous 5G Test-bed’. The webinar provided an overview of the project along with IIT Bombay’s contribution towards the testbed. \nAbout the Webinar: The webinar provided an overview of the end-to-end 5G testbed\, developed indigenously by a consortium of eight leading Indian academic and research institutes. 5G promises much higher data rates and new applications to take telecommunication networks to the next level in near future. The goal of this testbed is to develop the key components of 5G networks from the ground up\, in order to make them available for experimentation and further development to researchers\, startups\, industry and other players in the Indian telecommunications ecosystem. \nThe 5G testbed team at IIT Bombay has led the development of the 5G core subsystem\, consisting of components that interface with the radio access network and provide registration\, session management\, high-speed data forwarding and other core network services in the 5G network. A key feature of the 5G network is a unified core supporting a variety of access technologies. Wi-Fi is one of the most popular wireless access technologies today and it is expected to be an integral component of the 5G network too. Mittal is associated with TSDSI as Advisor with special focus on standardisation in wireless and wireline systems and handles standards related activities of TSDSI in 3GPP and ITU-R. \nHe began his career in R&D at Indian Telephone Industries Ltd and later joined Department of Telecommunication (DoT)\, Government of India where he worked in a variety of domains like Satellite Communication\, OFC\, Microwave\, Mobile Networks\, Switching Systems\, Network Management\, Licensing\, Regulation\, Standards\, Testing and Certification etc. He was Head\, Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC)\, the technology arm of the Department of Telecommunications. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI is proud to announce the 29th webinar in the knowledge sharing series under the aegis of the India-EU Partnership Project on Collaboration for ICT Standardisation on “OpenAirInterface: Democratizing innovation in the 5G era”. \nAbstract: \nOpenAirInterface (OAI) is an open-source project that implements the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) technology on general purpose x86 computing hardware and Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Software Defined Radio (SDR) cards like the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). It makes it possible to deploy and operate a 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network today and 5G New Radio (NR) networks at a very low cost. Moreover\, the open-source code can be adapted to different use cases and deployment and new functionality can be implemented\, making it an ideal platform for both industrial and academic research. The OAI Software Alliance (OSA) is a non-profit consortium fostering a community of industrial as well as research contributors. It also developed the OAI public license which is an open source license that allows contributors to implement their own patented technology without having to relinquish their intellectual property rights. This new clause is in agreement with the Fair\, Reasonable And Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) clause found in 3GPP. \nIn this talk\, we are going to describe the current OAI state-of-the-art of the development\, the OAI community and development process\, as well as the OAI public license and its usage by academia and industry. \nModerator: Mr Prakash R\, Technical Expert\, Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) \nModerator Bio: Mr. Prakash R holds the designation of “Technical Expert” in Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). He has been working as a researcher in the telecom industry for the past 27 years. His current interests include Software-intensive Telecom Systems\, Wireless Networks (4G/5G/6G)\, Data Networks\, Cloud Computing\, Software Defined Networks\, Open Source and Standardization. \nMr. Prakash completed his B.Tech at R.V.College of Engineering\, Bangalore in 1993. He has been working in C-DOT since 1994 in various roles as a Research Engineer\, Team Leader\, Senior Program Manager\, Business Unit Head/Division manager and is currently holding an Executive position. He has worked on various aspects of telecommunications including Digital Switching Systems\, Voice-over-IP\, Internet Telephony\, Fault-tolerant Systems\, Software-intensive Telecom systems\, Organizational Processes (CMMI)\, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)\, Organizational Change Management and creating Marketing department in C-DOT. \nHe is currently the coordinator for the following programs: 4G/LTE Radio Access Network\, 5G and ERP Implementation at C-DOT. He is also responsible for C-DOT Academic Research Engagement (CARE) Program and other R&D collaborations. He is a member of the technology roadmap and strategic planning group in C-DOT. \nHe is an IEEE Senior Member\, IETE Fellow and ACM Member and also serves as Vice Chair in the Study Group Networks of TSDSI. \nSpeaker: Florian Kaltenberger\, Assistant Professor\, EURECOM \nSpeaker Bio: Florian Kaltenberger is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Systems Department at EURECOM (France). He received his Diploma degree (Dipl.-Ing.) and his PhD both in Technical Mathematics from the Vienna University of Technology 2002 and 2007 respectively. \nHe is part of the management team for the real-time open-source 5G platform OpenAirInterface.org and the general secretary of the OAI software alliance. He is coordinating the developments of the OAI radio access network project group\, which delivered support for 5G non-standalone access in 2020 and for 5G standalone access in 2021. He also manages several research projects (industrial and academic) around the platform and teaches a course on radio engineering. His research interests include 5G and MIMO systems at large\, software defined radio\, signal processing for wireless communications\, as well as channel modeling and simulation. \nIn 2013\, he received the Neal Shepherd Best Propagation Award for the Journal article “Experimental characterization and modelling of outdoor-to-indoor and indoor-to-indoor distributed channels” (IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology\, Vol.59\, N°5\, June 2010). DESCRIPTION:India is in the grip of a COVID -19 Pandemic spiral with positive cases continuing to rise and new mutations being discovered. Medical infrastructure is overstretched. A large percentage of COVID casualties in this second wave are because of lack of oxygen– a situation that could have been prevented in most cases by timely support through oxygen concentrators or ventilators in extreme cases. Oxygen concentrators have become the crucial first-aid tool in this battle.  However\, there is a severe shortage of concentrators in the market with the sudden surge in demand from end users\, RWAs and small nursing homes/hospitals. \nThe need of the hour is to have “Affordable” concentrators and ventilators that can be mass produced within the country\, backed by a robust supply chain. SUMMARY:ONLINE REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON “5G Test Bed Initiative at IIT Delhi” (April 13\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:5G holds great promise for India\, one of the three largest telecom markets of the world and racing towards becoming a digital economy. It is also a golden opportunity to close the gap in telecom manufacturing in the country. \nITU has recently approved three Radio Interface technologies- 3GPP 5G-RIT\, 3GPP 5G-SRIT and TSDSI’s 5Gi conforming to the International Mobile Telecommunications 2020 (IMT 2020)\, aka 5G. These will now be used for global commercial deployments. Technology demonstrations to showcase potential of 5G and test beds are now gaining centre stage. \n 5G Test Bed Initiative: IIT Delhi \nA multi-institute collaborative Research project on 5G Indigenous Testbed\, is being executed with participation from eight institutes – IIT Bombay\, IIT Delhi\, IIT Hyderabad\, IIT Madras\, IIT Kanpur\, IISc Bangalore\, CEWiT and SAMEER. Each institute is contributing to the test bed in a complementary manner based on their expertise and interest. SUMMARY:TSDSI-TIA Workshop on “5G Networks: Strategies for Enabling Standards Driven Technologies & Innovation” (April 7 & 9\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:India has staked a claim to development of global 5G standards thanks to contributions by TSDSI. TSDSI members actively contributed towards drafting of the “Making India 5G Ready” report of Department of Telecommunication – 5G High Level Forum. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\, an UN body that is setting requirements for IMT 2020 (aka 5G)\, adopted the Low-Mobility-Large-Cell (LMLC) use case proposed by TSDSI as a mandatory 5G requirement in 2017. This addresses the problem of rural coverage by mandating large cell sizes in rural terrains\, scattered and/or sparsely populated areas in developing as well as developed countries. 5Gi\, the first ever Mobile Radio Interface Technology contribution from India\, developed by TSDSI has recently been approved as one of the 3 Radio Interface Technologies of IMT-2020\, paving the way for 100% broadband connectivity in India. TSDSI has also begun work on technologies beyond 5G. \nTIA has a rich history of developing and establishing global standards which are critical to the deployment of various communications networks.  In particular\, our technology standards are used for the design\, construction\, and maintenance of towers for antennas\, as well as for the design and deployment of cabling infrastructure\, both copper and fiber\, for homes\, commercial buildings\, and data centers.  These standards are all being updated by their respective engineering committees to enable and support the 5G environment.  In addition\, TIA’s Technology Programs are focused on enabling industry advancements for Smart Buildings and Data Centers and our program participant working groups are addressing the unique needs for building out 5G and IoT infrastructure for public and private spaces.  TL 9000 is our globally recognized process-based quality management system standard relied on by service providers and suppliers for deploying all ICT equipment and services\, including 5G and IoT.  Our new Supply Chain security standard will provide a similar verifiable\, process-based standard for ensuring the security of the 5G supply chain. \nDigital communications technologies are playing an increasingly indispensable role in our lives\, which is expected to be further enhanced by 5G. 5G will play a critical role in the emerging environment – be it remote surgeries\, Low-cost Automation\, Smart manufacturing\, M2M. In this scenario\, it is important to recognize the significance of supporting but critical aspects – Data Centre Infrastructure\, Supply Chain Security and Service Performance Reliability. \nAbout the Workshop: \nTSDSI and TIA\, as part of our agreement to collaborate for progress of ICT standards\, are jointly organizing a workshop on “5G Networks: Strategies for Enabling Standards Driven Technologies & Innovation” on 7 & 9 April 2021. \nThe workshop will dwell on following strategically important technologies/standards in the current ecosystem. \nSession #11: Data Centre Technologies for 5G and Evolving Trends in Standardization \nSession Chairs – Jacques Fluet (TIA)\, R Prakash (TSDSI) \nThe data center is evolving to meet the new requirements driven by 5G. This session will discuss what is driving this evolution and how the data centers are evolving to meet the challenges. \nSession #12: Supply Chain Security \nSession Chairs- Ken Koffman (TIA)\, Sharad Arora (TSDSI) \nThe information and communications technology (ICT) industry has an obligation to ensure that the devices\, equipment\, and networks relied on by businesses and consumers\, can be trusted.  Threats to the global communications infrastructure and the ICT supply chain has reached an all-time high. Emerging technologies will further expand the attack surface. While existing standards address cybersecurity across various industries\, no single document has adequately covered all aspects of security and focused on requirements for the ICT supply chain. Supply chain attacks in this industry have the potential to impact global networks and tens of millions of users.  This session will review the effort TIA is undertaking to create and release a comprehensive\, certifiable\, process-based Supply Chain Security standard this year.  It will be followed by a panel discussion of esteemed experts from government\, network operators\, ICT vendors\, and SDO’s discussing the security challenges we face now and in the 5G world.   \nSession#21: Service Performance Reliability Requirements from Next Gen Networks for Connected Vehicles  \nSession Chairs – Jacques Fluet (TIA)\, Sharad Arora (TSDSI) \nThe 5G technology is enabling new levels of performance for the wireless networks that is opening horizons for the Network Operators\, the Applications Providers\, as well as the various industry domains.    As new technology and features are deployed in the networks\, new levels of\, adaptability\, and reliability will become the foundation used to deliver new services that were not possible before. This session will provide an overview of these new technologies and features and discuss how it applies to the very challenging connected vehicle use cases. \nSession #22 will feature expert talks on Interoperability for Public Safety Mobile Networks \nIt is critically important that different public safety organizations are able to communicate with each other over mobile networks in the event of an emergency.  TIA provides the standards for ensuring interoperability of both the air interface and the networks in the US and for multiple other countries. TSDSI has published a technical report on “Broadband Public Protection and Disaster Recovery (PPDR) Communication Systems in India”. SUMMARY:Workshop on "Visible light for Broadband Communications: Current Research & Standardization" (March 25-26\, 2021: Online)
DESCRIPTION:IIIT Delhi Center of Excellence on LiFi supported by India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project is organizing a workshop on “Visible light for Broadband Communications: Current Research & Standardization” on 25-26 March 2021 from 9:30 AM IST onwards. \nThe two-day workshop will feature invited speakers from academia\, industry\, start-ups\, and government concerns\, both from India and the EU. Due to the ongoing pandemic situation\, the workshop will be held in a virtual-mode. \nBackground: \nA Center of Excellence (CoE) on LiFi has been established in IIIT Delhi under the purview of the India-EU ICT Standardisation Cooperation Project. As a part of this project\, the CoE will not only design relevant courses on LiFi\, but will also facilitate capacity building by supporting research collaborations and exchange of experts between India and the EU. To kickstart the activities of the CoE\, this workshop is being organized. \nAbout the Workshop: \nVisible Light Communication technology will be most useful in indoor environments as it will be able to provide large bandwidths. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI is proud to announce a session on “Looking Beyond 5G – Path to 6G” in Convergence India 2021 \nAbout the Session: \nITU has recently approved three Radio Interface technologies – 3GPP 5G-SRIT\, 3GPP 5G-RIT and TSDSI’s 5Gi conforming to the International Mobile Telecommunications 2020 (IMT-2020)\, aka 5G. These will now be used for global commercial deployments. 5G is slated to become the backbone of tomorrow’s digital economy – driven by an ecosystem of near ubiquitous\, intelligent at the edge\, connected devices in various verticals\, apart from realization of AR/VR based applications for users.  Learnings and feedback from these deployments will continue to tune the standards in the coming days and shape the technology evolution path. \nMeanwhile\, the research community has already begun deliberations on technologies for the next decade – looking beyond 5G and 6G\, from 2018 onwards. Academic Institutes and Research agencies\, technology companies and fast-growing breed of deep technology startups in Europe\, America and Asia Pacific regions are involved in focus activities to explore the use cases and potential technologies. \nGlobal Standards forums\, (including ITU and 3GPP) are spearheading efforts in this area. ITU’s IMT2020 standards (aka 5G) focus on 3 pillars of new capability – Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC)\, enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC). He is currently a Professor of Multimedia Systems in the College of Engineering\, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University London. He leads the Intelligent Digital Economy and Society Research Centre and is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting. \nHis research interests are concerned with the development of Multimedia Networked Systems applied to Future of Broadcasting\, Cellular Communications\, 2D/3D digital video/graphics media and the synergies between these technologies towards their application towards the benefit of the smart homes\, cities environment\, health and societies. \nHe has participated in twelve EU (Horizon 2020\, IST\, RACE and ACTS) research projects and two EPSRC funded research projects since 1986 and he has led three of these (CISMUNDUS\, PLUTO and 3D MURALE). He leads a research team of 5 PhD students\, whose research is concerned with management of heterogeneous Visible Light Communications and millimetre wave networks for low latency broadband in buildings\, Internet of Things for Health and Safety systems in hospitals 3D MIMO and efficient Software Defined Networks architectures. \nSpeaker: Anand Srivastava\, Professor in ECE department\, IIIT Delhi \nSpeaker Bio: Anand Srivastava did his M.Tech. and Ph.D. from IIT Delhi and is currently working in IIIT Delhi as Professor in ECE department. Before joining IIIT Delhi\, he was Dean & Professor in School of Computing and Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Mandi\, HP\, India and also Adjunct faculty at IIT Delhi. Prior to this\, he was with Alcatel-Lucent-Bell Labs\, India as solution architect for access and core networks. Before joining Alcatel Lucent\, he had a long stint (∼ 20 years) with Center for Development of Telematics (CDOT)\, a telecom research center of Govt. of India where he was Director and member of CDOT Board. During his stay in CDOT\, he provided technical leadership and motivation to extremely qualified team of engineers engaged in the development of national level projects in the areas of Telecom Security Systems\, Network Management System\, Intelligent Networks\, Operations Support Systems\, Access Networks (GPON) and Optical Technology based products. DESCRIPTION:TSDSI in association with Cloud Computing Innovation Council of India (CCICI) and ESDS Software Solutions is organising an Online event to release the ‘Cloud Interoperability Standards Reference Report‘ on 01st October 2020 (Thursday) from 11:00 to 13:00 pm IST. \nCloud computing is dominated by proprietary APIs and processes for a user or application interaction with the cloud leading to cloud API propagation and creation of issues such as vendor lock-in\, non-portability and inflexibility to use multiple vendors\, inability to switch between different vendors and reverting to the organization’s own data center resources seamlessly. However\, creating standards can accelerate the growth of the cloud market by reducing fears of vendor lock-in\, and would thereby be beneficial to Cloud Service Providers as well. Apart from providing the flexibility to the users of cloud services and propelling the economic growth\, development of Interoperability and Portability standards shall go a long way in supporting the digitization initiatives of the Indian government. \nTSDSI was mandated by DoT in 22nd December 2017 to work on standards of Cloud interoperability and portability. TSDSI worked with CCICI jointly on development of the Cloud Interoperability & Portability (CIP) Standards for multiple number of use cases. The first report on ‘Cloud Interoperability Standards Reference Report’ is being released at this event.
